Sound

Monroe Crossing is quite flexible and will work with you to ensure the best sound possible for the audience. We travel self-contained and perform around a single large diaphragm condenser microphone. We also have lines for bass and a side microphone for guitar. Please be advised that we will not perform with individual microphones. Please contact Mark at 612-386-1070 with questions regarding stage, sound, lights or power.

If WE are providing sound, we will need the following:
  • Power
    • 15amps 120volts dedicated to the stage within 50 feet of stage left. Please, no sharing our power with anything else. Someone who knows the location of the fuse box and has access to it should be on site for the entire performance.
    • Because of the voltage loss of long extension cords, if power is more than 100' from stage left, have an electrician provide a power distribution unit. This is for everyone's safety.
    • If a generator is being used, proper grounding and power filtering should be included. The cheaper generators may provide more power but are frequently lacking in power filters. An ungrounded generator will NOT be acceptable.
  • Opening Acts
    • We are glad to allow a single opening act use of our sound system. We will provide our standard microphone arrangement and bass amp.
    • We do NOT carry mics, stands, mic cords or anything else for opening acts unless specifically contracted to do so.
    • We will have sixteen inputs available. The opening act must provide all the mics, stands, cords and di's.
    • Please have the opening act contact Mark at 612-386-1070 to confirm their requirements will be met.
    • If your event consists of more than Monroe Crossing and an opening act, our sound system is available for hire. Please contact Mark at 612-386-1070 for further information.
  • Load in and out
    • Preferred load in and out is to be able to park the van close to the stage, without stairs.
    • Barring a preferred load in, a person or two who can help carry is appreciated.
If YOU are providing sound,
  • We have found it works best for us to provide two line level xlr feeds, one for FOH and one for monitors. This allows us to provide a consistent FOH and monitor mixes and use our manual parametric eq to kill feedback issues. We trust the FOH engineer to eq for taste. We will be rigged before our stage time and have a written procedure for bringing up FOH and monitors.
  • We'll need a single 120v drop downstage, stage left.
  • Main speakers should be JBL MPRO or better in quality and include subwoofers. Keep in mind that the standard 15" with a horn does NOT provide the range of sound required and that subwoofers are a must. No JBL Soundfactor, EV Force, Nady, Gemini etc.
  • If using an installed system, the mains processing must be accessible for modification. Our primary concern is system compression. Frequently, systems are too compressed. If this is the case, we need to have access to the main system processor.
  • A single, quality monitor downstage, center, in front of the mic with a mix that matches the main mix with a different eq
  • In unusual circumstances such as flying or when we cannot provide our rack
    • a single mic stand without boom
    • large diaphragm microphone with cardioid pattern
      • Our preferred microphone is an AT3035. We will have ours with us and will use it if an adequate mic is not provided. If an acceptable microphone is in place and tuned, we will gladly use it.
      • Other acceptable mics include: KSM-44, etc.
      • NOT acceptable are MXL, Samson,
    • a microphone stage left of the main mic for guitar
    • Arrangements for the bass if we are flying
      • Preferred option is a bass amp downstage, stage left
        • Preferred amp is a Phil Jones Briefcase Bass Amp. Acceptable options include the Gallien-Krueger line, Acoustic Image, SWR, or other acoustic oriented bass amps
        • NOT acceptable are the a "rock" bass amps. Distortion is a definite no-no
      • Acceptable option is a quality DI and a quality monitor placed downstage, stage left with a separate mix containing just the bass.
    • FOH must have, at minimum, a quality 31 band EQ dedicated to and available for tuning the microphone. Preferred option is a parametric eq. This is required to ensure the best performance of the single microphone.
    • Having access to a quality reverb, though not a deal breaker, can come in handy.
Stage Requirements
  • Minimum stage available is 15' wide by 8' deep. This size is the performance area and does not include space for speakers or lights.
  • We are a high energy act so the stage must be solid. Hay wagons are cute but they cannot be used as a stage unless they are blocked or jacked in all four corners.
Lighting
  • If you are providing lighting
    • We'll want even coverage over an area 15' wide by 10' deep centered on the stage.
    • White stage lighting is fine. Color stage washes are fine as long as the front lighting is mostly white.
    • Avoid excessive flashing lights or over-use of movers.
    • Foggers, fazers and oil based hazers are all a non-starter. Quality water based hazers can be used judiciously.
  • If we provide lighting
    • Lighting must be contracted ahead of time or it will be billed separately.
    • Please have someone on site with knowledge of and access to the fuse box. This is very important as we don't always know what else is on the circuit and lights draw a lot of power.
    • We carry a small but flexible lighting system. The size or the venue and locations available for the light trees will determine what lighting is used. Lighting requires a stand alone 15 amp circuit.
Dressing Room/Green Room
  • We need a place to change. We'll need a place, out of view from the public, with a chair, table, a clothes rack, electricity and a mirror, full length mirror preferred. Bathrooms, port-a-johns, and the like are NOT acceptable.
Procedure for bring our stage up in your system
  • We will provide one line level xlr for FOH and one for monitors.
  • Fader down and mute our feed on both FOH and monitor
  • We will provide signal for setting trim levels at both FOH and monitor world
  • Upon confirmation of trim level, unmute and SLOWLY bring FOH volume up
    • If feedback begins, bring the level back slightly and wait for confirmation from stage before going further
    • Mark will clear the feedback
    • Repeat until we achieve performance levels
  • Once performance level is achieved FOH engineer can make broad eq adjustments to taste.
  • Once FOH is set the monitor level can be unmuted and raised SLOWLY.
    • If feedback begins, bring the level back slightly and wait for confirmation from stage before going further
    • Mark will clear the feedback
    • Repeat until we achieve performance levels
  • Once performance level is reached please make no further changes to the monitors
