Guitar and Vocals
Singer/guitarist Derek Johnson joined Monroe Crossing at the beginning of 2011. Derek grew up on the Dakota prairie in Moorhead, Minnesota. In 1993 he moved to Minneapolis and for many years he performed in a variety of rock and roll bands. Around the "turn of the century" Derek discovered bluegrass music and there’s been no turning back. He spent several years developing his bluegrass vocal styling and guitar chops in a band called The Boot Draggers before co-founding The High 48s Bluegrass Band in 2006.
The High 48s released four full-length recordings, played shows across the country, and took first place in the 2008 Rocky Grass band competition in Lyons, Colorado.
Derek is not only a fine singer and guitarist, he is also an excellent songwriter. Listen for some of his original songs when Monroe Crossing appears in concert — including the title track on the new CD "Joy Joy Joy"!
